Announcements and Accolades

WRITERS AT RICE

Houstonians and co-authors Jason L. Fowell and John Bott will visit Rice Epicurean Markets on Saturday, June  5th, when they will sign copies of their just-released book, Bond Daddy. The signing will take place at 5016 San Felipe (Uptown) and 3745 Westheimer (River Oaks), with an author at each location. They will be in the store from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Bond Daddy is inspired by actual events from a 1970s Houston, Texas, boiler room operation and chronicles the successes, excesses, and failures of men pushed to their limits who end up secretly living abroad, wasting away in prison or mysteriously murdered.

The novel follows Aaron and Jack, best friends since high school, who are hired by a brokerage firm that begins the strict training of each broker before they are licensed. The lure of fast money pulls Aaron and Jack into a world driven by high-pressure commission sales where morals and ethics take a backseat to big paydays. Surviving the firm's grueling interview process, harsh cold-calling and aggressive tactics, takes each down a different path in an attempt to endure the shark-infested trading floor.

Aaron's natural aptitude with people gives him quick success; however, Jack's first sale eludes him for months-causing marital problems and pushing him to the brink of depression. But as the friends turn into big producers, the firm's partners do more than just take them from the poor house to fancy cars. Aaron and Jack are introduced to a hedonistic lifestyle filled with wild adventures and seedy relationships riddled with dangerous vices.

The author, Jason L. Fowell, is a practicing attorney who lives in Houston with his wife and twin son and daughter. The co-author, John Bott, is a licensed securities broker who has worked in the bond market for over thirty years and lives with his wife in Pearland. John and Jason met in 1998, when John hired Jason as a broker and the two have been friends since.

The ongoing Writers at Rice program brings area authors to our stores to meet the public and sign recently released books. Over the past several years, the program has hosted Barbara Bush, Nellie Connally, Peter Roussell, astronaut Walter Cunningham, Carolyn Farb, Houston First Lady Andrea White, Houston Chronicle columnist Leon Hale, basketball great Clyde Drexler and famed pastry queen, Rebecca Rather.

Bond Daddy will be available for purchase in Rice Epicurean. Only those books purchased in the store on Saturday, June 5th are eligible for signing.
